Coffee, Kids and Calendula

calendula

“Do people actually eat edible flowers? And, what’s the best way to use them?”

I wish I had a photo of me at 4:30 AM, laptop open as I sit in bed researching this exact topic. My coffee is getting cold on the nightstand and my two-year-old is literally laying on my chest as my right arm stretches over her to type. (Thank goodness I have access to my less effective left hand.)

This summer I’ll be growing Calendula, a decision that started because I love flowers and it is an “insect repellent” perfect for our patio produce. Here are two things I'm going to make:

  1. Calendula Tea. It can be made with dried flowers or fresh flowers, inside or outside. Forget how to make it, check out what to do with your homemade tea! For 14 pretty incredible ways to use calendula tea, hop over and visit The Nerdy Farm Wife. Uses include face wash, calendula ice and even treatments for dogs prone to hot spots or other raw areas. (I’ll be trying that on my little dog-nephew.) Trust me, it’s a bookmark-worthy list.
  2. Calendula Oil. I won't lie, I'm slightly intimidated by making my own oil. But, I'm sure after I try it I'll learn how easy it is, especially because MommyPotamus offered two ways: a short way and a long way. I'm going to try both.

You'll be the first to know when I start eating Calendula! For now, the kids are excited about flowers and I'm envisioning calendula tea in my mug instead of this coffee.
